After reforming in December 2012 to produce and promote their compilation album ‘Another Time, 1989 – 1994’ The Rainkings, refreshed and motivated, decided to stay together and set about writing a bunch of new songs.
Stephen Holt (Inspiral Carpets), Dave Swift (ex- Inspiral Carpets) and John Rowland (ex- The Bodines) were joined on bass by Cathy Brooks (Dub Sex and Dumb) and Chris Hutchison on keyboards & guitar, and recorded 3 new songs in November 2013.
Nothing’s Set in Stone, In From the Rain and By My Side were recorded at Big Mushroom studios with Jim Spencer, engineer, who has previously worked with The Charlatans and Inspiral Carpets amongst many others.
Due to Stephen being busy with Inspiral Carpets in 2014 the band took a year out but reunited in February 2015. Now minus Hutchison who had moved to China, the band got together to record 2 more songs at SSR in Manchester with Paul Williams, Wimmy.
Low Hit and Getting Nowhere put together with the 3 tracks recorded in 2013 formed the latest release, the ‘Fiveways EP’. Fiveways was released on the 27th April 2015 on their own Hear Here Records label.
With the addition of Kev Clarke on drums, temporarily relacing John Rowland, the Rainkings will be writing new material and playing gigs in 2016.
Back in the mid to late eighties The Train Set emerged from the Crewe/Winsford indie music scene to make an impact on the Manchester and Liverpool gig circuit as well as the national music press. The band released two 12? singles which both broke the Indie Chart and performed at venues across the country including gigs at Dingwalls, the Astoria in London and Manchester’s Hacienda. They were featured in both the NME and Melody Maker through interviews and positive features by Stuart Maconie and Robin Denslow etc.
