¡No pasarán! with archive footage, a talk by artist Simon Manfield plus stories, poetry & music from The History Troupe & Hillbilly Troupe
£5/£6 [+ 10% Booking fee]
Doors open 7:45pm for 8pm start
An evening to mark the 80th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War and remember the sacrifices of the volunteers in the International Brigades.
Marshall Mateer (Film Co-ordinator for the International Brigade Memorial Trust) will show a film montage of archive footage and commemorative events.
Local artist Simon Manfield will give an illustrated talk about his experience as a documentary illustrator at the excavation of a Spanish civil war era mass grave in the village of Valdediós, Asturias in the summer of 2003. The resulting work, entitled Memoria Histórica, is a moving testament to the small community as it begins the long and painful process of rediscovery, revealing the fate of friends, relatives and the horrors of the civil war.
We’ll also have stories, poems and songs all about the Spanish Civil War from The History Troupe & Hillbilly Troupe. The evening will then be rounded off by a set of rousing music from Hillbilly Troupe, a collective of seasoned professional musicians from Hull who play folk infused with punk, ska and blues.
