£21/£23 [+10% Booking Fee]
7pm – 11.30pm
Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry needs little introduction – a legend of Jamaican music whose influence and reach is felt around the globe. Lee Perry comes to play an intimate show at the Hebden Bridge Trades Club as part of a tour celebrating his 80th birthday with a special set dedicated to his 1976 classic album Super Ape. With support before and after the live show from Chapter 4 DJ’s.
Lee Perry has been involved in music since the 1950s when he worked around the classic Jamaican studios of the time and produced early Reggae and Ska classics with his house band The Upsetters. As a producer Perry soon built up a reputation for experimenting with effects and become a pioneer of Dub music -sonically and artistically taking Reggae music to new heights.
The output from Lee Perry’s Black Ark studio remains among the best Reggae music ever produced. Hundreds of tracks were cut with some of the greatest vocalists of the Roots era: Max Romeo (Chase The Devil), Junior Murvin (Police and Thieves), The Congos (Fisherman) and Bob Marley (Soul Rebel) all cut classic tracks with Perry that define a cultural peak of Reggae music. At the Ark Scratch worked his magic behind the mixing desk creating music that managed to meet both with popular success while also creating unconventional rhythms that were drenched in innovative effects and production techniques. He also regularly used his vocals to great effect on tracks such as ‘Soul Fire’ and ‘Roast Fish and Cornbread’.
In more recent times Perry has worked with UK producers such as Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound), Mad Professor and The Orb – always pushing the boundaries of ‘Reggae’ music.
This event is fully booked.
