In 1968, 18-year-old Terry Reid earned high praise from Aretha Franklin, who said, ‘There are only three things happening in England: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Terry Reid.’ Touring with the Stones, Cream, Jethro Tull, and Fleetwood Mac, and playing festivals like Isle of Wight and Glastonbury, Reid quickly cemented his reputation. His decision to recommend Robert Plant to Led Zeppelin instead of joining himself has since become rock legend.
Nicknamed ‘Superlungs’ for his soaring voice, Reid’s 1969 cover of Donovan’s Superlungs My Supergirl remains iconic. His songs have since featured in films like Up In The Air and The Devil’s Rejects, and he has collaborated with DJ Shadow, Marianne Faithfull, and The Raconteurs.
Graham Nash produced Reid’s 1976 album Seed Of Memory, and the two still occasionally reunite onstage, dazzling audiences with their harmonies. Whether playing country, soul, rock, or Latin-tinged music, Reid’s unique phrasing and emotional delivery set him apart.
Still evolving after decades, Terry Reid continues to captivate audiences worldwide. As Joe Bonamassa put it, ‘Cheers Terry, you are a superstar.’
Starting my career in 1964 at just 15, I found myself surrounded by musicians who became lifelong friends and legends. Every UK tour still reminds me of those early days. Come share the memories with us again this September.
