A living Lancashire Folk Legend
One summer’s night in 1965 saw a chance pub encounter between John Howarth and the brothers Gerry and Larry Kearns. They were by no means strangers. Indeed Larry and John had shared a school desk for four years.
This chance encounter launched The Oldham Tinkers on a weird and marvellous apprenticeship presenting their music, songs, chants and poetry in pubs, halls, tents and once in a giant bucket of a J.C.B.
The group recorded 7 albums with Topic Records, guested many times on the BBC on the John Peel and Andy Kershaw programmes, they provided the music for televisions Play for the Day, ’Kisses at Fifty’ and ‘The Lonely Mans Lover’. Once they were invited by the Queen herself to sing at a Royal Command performance. What a do that was; what an honour. But do you know? The Oldham Tinkers have never forgotten the J.C.B. bucket.
