Thursday 18th December
Kirsty Almeida & The Troubadours
£10/£12 (+10% Booking fee)
Doors open 8pm
Kirsty Almeida draws you into her enchanting, uplifting and, at times, devilishly dark world. Classic songwriting mixes with murder lullabies, broken blues-folk beauty, New Orleans soul, voodoo-tinged-pop and a healthy dose of Tim Burton-style brooding.
Kirsty is an all round creative and a highly innovative artist. Her visionary approach attracted the attention of BBC Television who have broadcast a ten-minute documentary on how Kirsty is creating new and exciting paths in the music industry as an independent artist. This was shown as part of the Inside Out series on BBC North West and on BBC iPlayer.
Her forthcoming album DejaVoodu was recorded at the State of the Ark Studios, London and features the production skills of legendary producer Youth (Killing Joke, The Verve, The Orb, Beth Orton, The Fireman with Sir Paul McCartney).
She has also released her enchanting collection of Winter Songs, exploring both the magic and darkness that the season brings.
Kirsty’s bringing together of visual art with her music has led to her producing customised handmade CD sleeves and creating magical events such as her Secret Gigs (audiences are whisked to secret locations and treated to intimate acoustic sets), Tea Dances (combining music, dancing, elegance…and cake!) and curating a street’s worth of performance art, instillations, music and storytelling as part of the Bury Light Night 2011.
“I try to be creative in everything I do. It’s about letting go and allowing the magic to happen, enabling my audience to step into another world.”
Now Manchester based, Kirsty was brought up in Gibraltar and traveled extensively as a child (living in Venezuela, Singapore, Florida and the Philippines, amongst others). She is part of a new wave of artists looking to build sustainable careers and finding exciting ways to do things differently in the music industry. Originally signed to Decca Records she has since gone on set up her own All Made Up label.
In 2010 she was invited by Nick Drake’s producer Joe Boyd to sing as part of Way To Blue: Songs of Nick Drake at The Barbican, London which was filmed for BBC 4. Kirsty has also performed with the Guy Barker Orchestra at the same venue as part of The 2009 London Jazz Festival (broadcast on BBC Radio 3).
Kirsty has also worked with Robbie Williams’ songwriter Guy Chambers and her collaboration with fellow Manchester resident Mr Scruff resulted in the hugely successful remix Pickled Spider.
Backed by her fabulous band, Kirsty has been winning rave reviews for her unique performances at festivals such as Glastonbury, V Festival, Big Chill, Lovebox and The Secret Garden Party.
