South African musician and creative visionary Moonchild Sanelly continues to blaze her own trail with her new studio album Full Moon, which was released in January 2025. Known for her vibrant style and genre-bending approach that spans Amapiano, Gqom, and her own ‘future ghetto funk,’ the Port Elizabeth-born artist has created a 12-song collection that showcases her versatility across electronic, afro-punk, edgy-pop, kwaito, and hip-hop sensibilities. Produced by Johan Hugo and recorded across multiple locations while touring, the album features standout tracks like Big Booty, Scrambled Eggs, and the vulnerable Xhosa-led Mntanam, while maintaining her signature club-ready beats and distinctive teal-colored aesthetic.
Thematically, Full Moon represents Sanelly’s most introspective work, focusing on self-love, forgiveness, and liberation as she revisits pivotal moments from her extraordinary journey. The self-described ‘collaboration whore’ has worked with artists from Beyoncé to Gorillaz, and following the success of 2024’s summer hit Big Man with Self Esteem, she continues to captivate international audiences with her unforgettable live performances at festivals like Glastonbury and SXSW. This body of work, which she describes as her proudest achievement, showcases the many sides of her artistry while maintaining her core message about bodily autonomy and self-acceptance, positioning 2025 as potentially her biggest year yet.
