From Cave Paintings to Origami: The History of Geometry
JOIN PROFESSOR DILLON MAYHEW as we journey through the rich history of geometry, from ancient Egypt through to the modern day.
This is a free talk brought to you by the University of Hebden Bridge. To guarantee your place, register below.
FOF THOUSANDS OF YEARS people have found beauty and meaning in the symmetry and patterns that fill our natural world. It all started long ago when the need to survey the land led to the science of length and area, which in turn established the fundamental ingredients of geometry.
Over the centuries, the subject has continued to fascinate the human civilisation. Famous mathematicians and philosophers have made landmark discoveries and developments in the field. And today, we still wonder at the shapes and dimensions that intrigued and bedazzled people all those years ago.
Meet your speaker – Professor Dillon Mayhew
Dillon works at the School of Computer Science at the University of Leeds. He is a member of the Algorithms and Complexity group. Prior to that, he was at Te Kura M?tai Tatauranga (School of Mathematics and Statistics) at Te Herenga Waka (Victoria University of Wellington) in New Zealand. Dillon’s research touches on various themes: the theory of computation, its connections to formal languages, and the power of those languages to make statements about discrete structures such as graphs and matroids.
