Josh Rouse, born in Nebraska, recorded his debut Dressed Like Nebraska (1998) in Nashville. The album’s success led to tours with Aimee Mann, Mark Etzel, and Vic Chestnut. His follow-up, Home (2000), featured Directions, which was used in Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky.
For his breakthrough, 1972 (2003), Rouse lightened up, moving away from his melancholy style. He was drawn to the warm sound of ’70s music and the communal vibe of soul. His next album, Nashville (2005), further expanded his audience.
After moving to Valencia, Spain, with his wife Paz, Rouse released Subtitulo (2006), which included the indie hit Quiet Town. He also experimented with Spanish songs on El Turista (2010). In 2014, he won a Goya Award for best song, Do You Really Want to Be in Love, from La Gran Familia Española.
His latest album, Going Places, was created during the pandemic in Spain. With his Spanish band, Rouse crafted ten relaxed, road-ready tracks in a small local venue.
