In forming Modern Nature, Jack Cooper (formerly of Ultimate Painting and Mazes) has continued the lineage of seminal bands who explore that liminal space between genres. Heady cues are taken from Talk Talk, Robert Wyatt and experimental musicians John Edwards and Evan Parker, who contribute to latest album Island of Noise, the group’s is the most complete set to date.
The work, heavily influenced by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, feels like a perfect reflection of those impressive influences. Clear additional inspiration is Modern Nature itself, Derek Jarman’s seminal book – a work which itself blurred lines between nature, art and the act of living a life that reflected both.
